Can you fall from grace?

This document is prepared mostly for believers. There are two groups of believers.

  • Group 1: the group that believes you can not fall from grace will continue to read for the joy of confirmation.

  • Group 2: the group that believes you can fall from grace, are most likely getting ready to go to another page or leave this website completely. Come on read it - can't hurt you but what it will do is cause you to love God more than you do now.  Knowing what He has done for you will enable a better relationship with your Father.

You must know the truth to be set free. Free from, yes but more importantly Free To love in your total forgiveness.

Yes! You sure can!
The bible says you can fall from grace:

GAL 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

If I did something bad, or if I continued in a sin a long time, I would think I had fallen from grace.  Yep, that is what I used to believe. What must I do to cause God to give up on me? 1PE 5:10 says, "But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you".

In his letter to the Galatian churches, there are those who have "fallen from grace". The people had received their righteousness of Christ by faith. They turned their faith another way and wanted to be justified by what - the law.

GAL 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

For us to fall from Gods favor it is done in our mind. It is to fall into self-righteousness and seek to be justified by the law.

HEB 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

Consider that the "evil heart" in this verse means more of a bad situation such as full of labors and hardships leading to lack of trust in God. Take care, brothers, that not one of you should have a heart that is sick caused by unbelief.

ROM 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

We see also the law does bring us its fruit.

ROM 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

[In the flesh] most likely has meant to you - sinful behavior or the effect of sin that brings guilt and condemnation. In the original, carnal is "meat" usually translated, "flesh" as to actions by the body.  The law measures deeds as to how it relates to the flesh.  Listen: the law is good for it can help to regulate the flesh. It can not change the heart.

HEB 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

HEB 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

HEB 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

ROM 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

It is common to believe you are in the flesh if you act unspiritual - like gambling, smoking, eating too much, or if you have anger, greed or lust. You should concern yourself with what you believe. Believe the truth of the gospel. Eternal life is in God - in -knowing Him, not in what we try to do for Him.

Just trust Him:

HEB 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

HEB 3:19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

Did not trust Him.

Listen: It says "unbelieving" heart and nothing about smoking, drinking, eating or how long you wear your hair. Most of the time Paul does not try to get people to stop doing the wrong things, but to start believing the right things.  The different gospel he writes about is a bewitched gospel that adds works of the law (actions  in the flesh) to faith in Christ. Not what you do but by trusting Christ.

GAL 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

GAL 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?

2CO 1:12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, {but by the grace of God}, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

PHI 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

If I am trying to perfect myself by the performance of my flesh I am trying to be justified by the law. Being in the flesh isn’t what I do or how I feel. It’s what I am trusting in. The bible when it speaks of the flesh, is not talking about a feeling or misbehavior. The comparison is between justification by works of the law to righteousness by trusting Jesus Christ. Our righteousness and relationship with the Father comes not from what we do but what we believe.

GAL 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

GAL 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

At the moment you putting your faith for righteousness in your own works, rather than accepting the righteousness of Christ by faith, "you are walking in the flesh" and are fallen from grace. We are to serve in the "newness of the Spirit, Jesus in us."

Walking in the Spirit is an experience. It is understanding the truth of the grace and love of Christ.

ROM 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

ROM 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Please read Roman Eight. You will see the explanation of the flesh and spirit by showing the law versus faith in the Jesus in you.  I am not more spiritual by what I do. You and I are at the same level of being spiritual because we are both one in Christ.

JOH 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

GAL 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

GAL 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

If we are no longer striving to be justified through the law, but are successfully justified through the Savior, we are not in the flesh we are in the Spirit.

If we are walking in the grace of Jesus in us we are not fallen from grace.

If we are walking in the flesh we are fallen from grace. So stop falling from grace by not trusting in the flesh (keeping the law)

GAL 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. GAL 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Please study Romans 8 and understand falling from grace, flesh, law, and spirit. Paul makes it easy to learn but you must have an open mind to the truth even if it is not what you have been taught in the past. I know. I have been as hard headed as the best of them. Thank God for Paul's letters.

it is impossible to experience justification by faith through the Spirit as long as you are mentally bound to justification by the law, through the flesh.

Please know that understanding the grace of the gospel comes only by God's revelation to you as you read His Word. Do not give up on Jesus for He will not give up on you.

ROM 8:3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,

Your righteousness is weak when it is trusting in the flesh but is very powerful when trusting in the Jesus in you.

We can study about living good or bad at another time, but for this study let us learn what we must trust in.

We were saved by grace, not by our performance but by faith in the performance of what Jesus did. We should live now the same way. Stay close to the Jesus in us and He will take care of what we do or don't do.
